The Pilot Nymph is the super hero version of the Mahalo Nymph. Far more durable and twice the bling on a 3x heavy hook, made for 20-30 pound Cutthroat in Pyramid Lake. Don’t lose the fish of a lifetime to a straight hook.
Imitates: Large chironomids, and large mayflies in Pyramid Lake.
Useful for: Nymphing for giant Lahontan Cutthroat under an indicator just off the bottom at slow sloping beaches. Equally as effective near sharp drop-offs/ledges near the shore. The 3X heavy wire needs a good hook set then hang on!
Tricks/Techniques: Nymphing under an indicator is the preferred method for early fall and spring fly fisherman. Keep the depth under the indicator shallow when fishing near sharp drop-offs or when fish are visible breaching the surface early and late in the day. Try retrieving this behind a Bottle Rocket, Tadpole or Beetle if watching an indicator just isn’t your thing. I wouldn’t recommend fishing tippet lighter then 3X ever at Pyramid, sharp teeth tend to shred the light stuff.
This fly is hand tied at my own bench in the United States of America under the highest of scrutiny. A tested and proven pattern.
